life story
At the end of the day it doesn't matter the size of your house or how much money you have. Our graves are all the same size. The gods will not care about your material gain. Instead, build your castle out of honor and your wealth out of wisdom. Those things will be engraved in your spirit.
Kent,
You are the best thing I never knew was possible. Thank you for loving me for who I am. You helped me achieve my untapped, ignored potential by teaching me how it feels to be a contributing member of society. Our life was meant to be. I understand you were called home. I’m so sorry we couldn't fix it. We tried like hell. I cannot promise I will not falter. You know I'm a bit of a clutz. You know I have a tendency to live in the clouds. The life we built, by my grit, I will keep it going. You will tell me when we see each other again that I did well. My promises and bond to you won't ever fail. I love you, your girls will know you and love you.
Please rest forever at ease knowing your life really meant something.
Love and affectionately,
Your “White Devil”
Last of a Dying Breed
Kent lived in California where he was raised with his family until his early adulthood. He graduated from Thomas Downey High School. He had real charisma. Being very adventurous from early on, anything he loved he did with all heart and all hands in. No matter the challenge; from surfing with his brother, rock climbing, skateboarding with his Aussie shepherds. Kent had a free spirit that allowed him into people's hearts, but also a ferocious streak not everyone fully understood. To the people that knew him, he was loyal and funny, charming and gorgeous, up for any challenge, used his quick wit and instincts to get himself to the next level.
After Kent moved from CA, his life brought him to Kitsap County in Washington state. Though the goal was to continue North and live in Alaska, his life was halted in an instant one evening when he was arrested and sentenced to a long prison term. Facing this for him would become the biggest challenge in his life that far. He was still Kent Gain. Everything mentioned above.
Taking his sentence for what it was and accepting the judgment he was also able to apply all of his attributes learned growing up as well as discover a kindred among the men he was doing his time with. His ability to push further and harder than most people gave him a chance to be strong and a driving force for the other men in a similar situation. There are a great many inmates and guards that he knew during his time in prison that still message and reach out to him and say he made a real positive difference in their lives.
Kent married Jessie Gain in April 2016. In November of 2016, their first daughter Winter Bird Gain was born. In January of 2019, they had another daughter, Fenris Helen Gain, and Ava N. Sandlin, 17, is Kent's stepdaughter by Jessie.
Legacy. Kindred. History. Love. Honor. Respect. Duty. Intellect.
Each of these words has a more disciplined definition to the Kent Gain family. All words as lived by in our household. Kent's and my life seemed fated to crash into each other's lives. Combined and with our separate experiences in life we bonded fervidly. As I live this will continue to be Winter, Fenris, and Ava's credo; an everyday life survived by us in legacy.
Kent and I had such a huge diversity of people that we'd come across in life. Christians, Lutheran, Catholic, non-denominational, Satanists, Wicca, Celtic, Asatru, etc. Culturally, we have known whites, Asians, blacks, foreigners, and more. We'd recall acquaintances and friends of every economical range; the rich, poor, middle class, and blue-collar, been friends with destitute, drug-addicted, drug dealing cartel, murderers, felons, crazies, comics, psychos, admired and despised. Our time involved in the justice system often revealed exactly how backward it is. How easily duped one could be if not versed in the law. The pros and cons on all sides can be manipulated no matter good intent.
Kent and I met in July 2015. This day was the first day of the rest of our lives. We would make a pact through loyalty, desire, and infatuation. Real love and understanding came soon after realizing just how these things only define themselves in time. We began trying to have a baby. This decision came 3 weeks into our relationship. After 8 months and a wedding, we conceived our first daughter Winter Bird Gain. When she was about 2 1/2 years old when we conceived Fenris Helen Gain, born in 2019.
Kent Gain was a son, sibling, adventurer, rock climber, surfer, skateboarder, and forest firefighter with U.S. Forestry Service in California. He had Hollywood's stunning good looks and a heart that would match any of the hero's people worship in stories. He'd become an infamous boyfriend who ultimately was charged with a very serious Assault 1 crime after he moved to Washington state in 1996. He spent 14 years of a 20-year sentence incarcerated.
Once he was released in 2013 he was now a free man; obviously, that much time locked up would affect anyone, all his life he had demons he struggled with. Time in prison was not a cakewalk. He persevered to become my husband in 2016 father to our 2 crazy ginger girls and to Ava, his stepdaughter. Like my husband, he was fire and ice, all love and tenderness, lover, passionate, kind, a true friend, in-law, caveman (Ooga affectionately called by me), strong, loyal, understanding, and fucking brilliant. Kindred amongst his fellow Asatruars, the kind of man today's weak-minded society might be afraid of but could really benefit from listening too. He was easy to talk to, hilarious, crude, no holds barred, and truthful. That man was probably more honest, forthcoming, and bolder than anyone I've ever known. All things I fell in love with. He was magic and beauty; strong and insane enough to take me on. We found our soul mates in one another.
Over the last 6 years, we built a sound foundation. His relentlessness and my ability to hold fast brought us a life we’d only dreamt of. We found something to hold onto that neither of us had before. In April 2021 we accomplished the purchase of our first home. We had been dreaming, conspiring, fighting, loving, learning, and growing together since that first July. Our home deemed “Heathen Hideaway” to us is a place to be grounded in.
Our dreams continued until August 2021 when his demons and the awfulness life throws at you became too much. He took his life. My husband loved his family. He and I were so in love from the first day he walked through my apartment door. A picture burned and branded into my best memories.
