life story

Wayne “Buddy” DuRand Jr. – A Big Heart, a Bright Smile, and a Love for the Open Road

Buddy lived his life full throttle—with laughter in his heart, grease on his hands, and love in his soul. He never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t said “How you doin’?” to yet. Whether he was turning a wrench, out for a smoke, or swapping stories, Buddy brought light and joy to everyone around him.

He taught those he loved to work hard, stay humble, and always find time for the things—and people—that make life worth living. Though his journey on the open road has come to an end, his spirit continues to ride on in the hearts of his family and friends, wherever life takes them next.

Buddy was one of a kind

Wayne Robert “Buddy” DuRand Jr. passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 30, 1947, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in White Bear Lake. In 1984, Buddy married the love of his life, Janice, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Four years later, they returned to Minnesota, where they settled in Inver Grove Heights to raise their family.

Buddy was the son of Jeanne Marie Elledge and Wayne Robert DuRand Sr., and the brother of Tommy DuRand, who all preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice DuRand; his sister, Merikay DuRand; his sister-in-law, Jackie DuRand; his daughter, Meri Kosman (Husband Troy); his son, Wayne DuRand III; and his five beautiful grandchildren: Shelby, Axel, Roxanne, Ravyenne, and Ozzie, who all adored their Papa Buddy.

Buddy spent much of his life behind the wheel of a semi-truck, driving both over the road independently and for Taylor Truck Line and locally for Danner Inc. He was an incredibly hard worker who took pride in everything he did and was deeply proud of the family he and Janice built together.

He had a lifelong love for planes, trains, and automobiles, and a real need for speed. In his younger years, Buddy raced drag boats and built hot rods, passing that same passion for engines and craftsmanship on to his kids especially his daughter Meri.

Buddy had the biggest heart, a contagious laugh, and was known for his famous “How you doin’?” greeting and warm smile. He had a special way of making everyone feel welcome and valued—though he might’ve also asked if you could loan him five dollars or if you had any ice cream handy.

Buddy lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. His kindness, humor, and joy for life left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him, and his spirit will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.
