About Warren
Warren Gene Hughes, 91, of Kelliher, MN died Friday, November 8, 2024 at Nielson Place in Bemidji.
Warren Gene Hughes was born in St. Paul, MN on January 30, 1933 to Hylma and Evans Hughes. He spent his early life in the Hugo area of St. Paul. In 1947 the family moved to the Kelliher area where he spent the rest of his life.
Warren was inducted into the Army in April of 1954. He did Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was assigned to the 8113th Engineering Company. He served in Korea and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in March of 1956. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the VFW.
Warren married Patricia Dahlgren June 1, 1958, and they purchased a farm in the Firman area of rural Kelliher. They had three children—Sherri, David, and Michael. Pat and Warren celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2008.
Warren worked at Skoe Implement in Kelliher until 1967. He quit to devote his full time to farming and logging. He had a beef cow-calf operation and also operated Hughes Timber, Inc. for many years until his son David took over the logging. In the 1960’s he was named the Beltrami County Young Farmer of the Year.
Warren’s biggest enjoyment was farming, especially baling hay when the weather cooperated. He also enjoyed working on machinery and was an accomplished mechanic.
Warren spent the last year of his life in Trillium Care Center. This facility is attached to Neilson Place where Pat is so she could see him often. The love and care he received there from Lisa and her staff was wonderful. We will be forever grateful to them all. He loved them too.
Warren was called OPA (German for Grandpa) by his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his children Sherri (Max) Dahl of Gemmel, David (Cindy) Hughes of Kelliher, and Michael Hughes of Kelliher, eight grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a great grandson Grayson James Waddell.
