life story
Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend
Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Virginia “Ginny” Johnson passed away peacefully at The Gardens at Episcopal Homes in St. Paul, Minnesota, surrounded by love and cherished memories.
Born in Minneapolis on September 18, 1946, Ginny was the daughter of Alvin and Ruth Vick. She spent her formative years in Mankato, graduating from Mankato High School in 1964. In 1970, she married David Lester Johnson, and the following year welcomed her only child, Heidi Sarah.
Ginny dedicated 32 years to the Minneapolis Public Library, primarily serving as a library aide in the Children’s Department at the Central Library downtown. Her warmth and kindness made her a favorite among coworkers and young readers alike, and she formed lifelong friendships through her work.
A true lover of life, Ginny found joy in music, travel, and shared experiences. She was a devoted Prince fan, attending many of his concerts over the years. Her travel adventures took her to Cuba on a Russian cruise ship in the 1980s, across Europe in the 1990s, to Norway in 2016, and most recently to Las Vegas in February 2024 with Heidi and sister Patrice—where she gleefully attended a Donny Osmond show, a performance at the Sphere, and a Prince tribute band.
Ginny found the most enjoyment through concerts, plays, movies, books, records, church gatherings, and the Minnesota State Fair. She valued connection and always chose to spend her time and money on experiences and relationships over material things.
After retiring, Ginny moved into senior living communities where she quickly became a beloved presence. She was known for remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and offering comfort during life’s challenges. Her sweet disposition, generosity, and empathy touched everyone she met.
In 2000, Ginny became a grandmother to David Alvin Johnson, and embraced the role with unmatched devotion. From neighborhood walks to Maplewood Mall outings filled with treats and action figures, she created a world of wonder and love for her grandson. She was endlessly proud of David and his accomplishments.
In 2023, Ginny moved to The Gardens at Episcopal Homes, where she thrived in the vibrant community, volunteering at the gift shop and delivering mail to fellow residents. Even after suffering a stroke in August 2025, she remained a beacon of resilience until her passing.
Ginny was preceded in death by sister, Judy; father, Alvin; and mother, Ruth. She is survived by sister, Patrice (Bart); daughter, Heidi (Deb); grandson, David; and former husband and friend, David.
Her legacy is one of kindness, perseverance, and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
