Tom's Highlights
Thomas Lee Guberud, aka “Tom the Bomb”, was born on August 22, 1961 in Wauwatosa, WI. He grew up loving hot wheels and plinking army men with his BB gun. He was known to re-engineer firecrackers to blow up his worn out toys, and enjoyed sending the model Estes Rockets to places unknown with his best friend and brother, Jim. How he managed to do both without blowing up a body part, is a testament to his ability to keep track of what was important.
Tom graduated from the University of MN with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1983 and worked various jobs over the years, but none were his passion as much as was the job of Uncle to his 2 nephews, Dane and Cody. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and his love of target shooting with his BB gun and wrist rockets eventually developed into a joy of target shooting with his gun collection. Duck hunting led him to purchase his dream home, a cabin on Lake Winnibigoshish, near Deer River, MN, and he moved there in 1999.
Tom, with his brother Jim, planned and executed many adventurous excursions, including a canoe trip to Great Slave Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories, and a kayak trip down the Grand Canyon, along with multiple Quetico and BWCA canoe trips. He could talk for hours about WWII military strategies and had an extensive collection of history books on all the great wars. He loved most Clint Eastwood movies and could recite many word for word. He was an accomplished kayaker, boater and fisherman. He had a head for facts, winning most trivia games, and was always ready to enjoy a game of poker or “ramp”. In later years, Tom helped his parents age gracefully at their own lake home property by always being ready to help out, mow the lawn, grab groceries or do whatever task was needed. Tom’s thoughtful, and often playful, teasing spirit is missed by all who loved him.
Tom is survived by his two brothers, Bob and Jim, his two sisters, Jane and Mary, and his two nephews, Dane and Cody.
