life story

A loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach and teacher.

Terry A. Zumberge, 75, of Coon Rapids, passed away peacefully January 5, 2023 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was a teacher in the Anoka-Hennepin school district for 30-plus years, teaching at Mississippi Elementary, Washington Elementary and Andover Elementary. He had a wonderful impact on his students’ lives starting with coaching a group of baseball players when he was only 19, and continuing with his daughters’ softball teams. Many students stayed connected with Terry inviting him to graduations, inductions to National Honor Society and weddings. Even in his final days, students and parents continued to visit him. His daughters followed in his footsteps and went on to become teachers.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and LaRena Zumberge, brothers Bert, Nile and Jack and his sister Mary Haworth.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce, daughters Pam (Marc) Backowski and Patti (Russ) Hinrichs, grandsons, Nick, Blake, Luke, Thomas and David, plus many nieces and nephews and extended families.

Terry enjoyed golfing and fishing with family and friends, and spending time around Lake Superior with his family. After leaving teaching, he was a golf ranger at The Links at Northfork. Even when Terry could no longer golf, he would spend his mornings with his friends at the course. He also continued to work with children by volunteering in his daughter Pam’s classroom.

He spent his last days at Ark on the River, an outstanding hospice home, and was surrounded by much love and kindness.

He will be greatly missed by many people, but Terry is now with his Heavenly Father.

A visitation with family and friends will be held at ReaLife Cooperative, 1555 Main Street NW, Coon Rapids, MN on Monday, January 16 from 1 to 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the immediate family for a memorial bench to be placed at The Ponds Golf Course in St. Francis where he spent time watching his daughters and grandchildren play golf. It will be placed on hole 8 on the Blue Course.
