life story

Like No Other

Steven Kurt Phifer passed away in his home in Mankato on April 29, 2021, just two days shy of his 72nd birthday. A graduate of Centennial High School, Steve headed north right after graduation. He spent 30 years working on the railroad at Erie and Reserve Mining, holding positions throughout Silver Bay and Babbitt.

Steve lived in Minneapolis, Duluth, Two Harbors, Mankato and Eustice, FL. But Ely, MN was truly home to his heart and his log cabin on One Pine Lake. A member of the infamous Jack Daniels Band, he was a fixture in town, recognized by many up until his passing.

Steve loved fishing, hunting, fishing, his dogs, music, and fishing. He traveled extensively through Mexico in search of the next great catch. He is preceded in death by his mother Josephine (Still) Phifer, his father Bob Phifer, and his dogs Rex, Runner, Tilly, Thunderpants, and Poncho. He is survived by his wife Judy (Thompson) Phifer, his daughters Leah and Kasey Phifer, and his step-children, Ben and Katie Olinger.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, September 23rd in the Twin Cities (location TBD). Please email steves_next_adventure@yahoo.com if you’d like to attend and receive additional details.
