life story
A man filled with love
How does one distill a man's life into a single paragraph? The task is daunting, and each person's rendition would undoubtedly vary. As it rightly should!
Sully, a name fondly recognized by many, possessed a heart of genuine warmth and a profound concern for his fellow human beings. He was swift to extend a hearty handshake or to offer his assistance wherever it was needed. Sully exuded a commanding presence that was impossible to overlook, and he harnessed this influence for the betterment of those around him.
Sully, Steve, Steven, Stevie, Dad ...
Born in November 1951 to Dolly (Dragert) and John Sullivan, Steve grew up in the Minnetonka, Hopkins, and St. Louis Park area and graduated from Hopkins High School.
In 1971, he married the love of his life, Diane Lipinski, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Together, they remained active in the parish, school, and neighborhood community while raising their children.
Steve was deeply devoted to his family and believed in the power of community. He encouraged involvement in everything from sports and 4-H to local events. Though an only child, Steve had a gift for building family wherever he went—through marriage, friendship, and his beloved American Legion family. He was a lifelong member of the Sons of the American Legion and a founding member of the Minnesota chapter of the American Legion Riders. His unwavering respect for veterans fueled his passion for service and advocacy.
Professionally, Steve spent his career as a machinist, contributing to projects as diverse as earthquake simulators in Asia, rollercoasters across the U.S., wave pools in Europe, and custom vehicle builds in his own garage.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Casey Lee. He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Stacy (Brian Wheeler); son, Shawn (Emma); grandchildren, Austin, Pendleton, Jarah, Henry, and Grace; and great-grandson, Arlo.
