About Steve

Stephen James Smith, age 61 died on September 5, 2022 at his residence in Minneapolis, Minnesota after enduring a lengthy battle with addiction.

Steve was born June 19, 1961, in Midland, Michigan to his parents, Raymond and Karen (Corbat) Smith. He grew up in Hemlock, the second oldest of six children, and graduated from Hemlock High School in 1980. He enjoyed winters snowmobiling in the woods and fields around home, and summers with his family swimming, fishing, and waterskiing at Houghton Lake and Indian River.

Steve liked working and being physically active. He owned and operated a landscaping and snow removal service business in Midland. He took pride in his work, and once won a City of Midland Appreciation of Beautification Award. He also loved to cook (and eat). Some of his specialties were mac & cheese, homemade soups, and enormous bowls of popcorn.

Even through his struggles, Steve had a big heart and loved his family.

Steve is survived by his parents; Raymond and Karen Smith, his siblings; Ray Smith, Kathy Smith, Maribeth (Mark) Osell; Mark (Kelly) Smith, and Matt Smith; his former spouse, Mary Machelski; nieces and nephews, Reed (Caitlin) Osell, Sydney (Jacob) Chastine, Sophia Smith, Sadie Smith, Sam Smith, Noelle Smith, Nick Smith, and Natalie Smith; Matthew Bluemer and Meghann Bluemer-Perry; one great-niece; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents.
