About Spencer

Spencer Lee Mackay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family after a very brief illness on July 2, 2024, in Mesa, AZ. He was born on January 10, 1950, in Fullerton, CA, to Frederick Gordon Mackay and Margaret Rohrbach Spencer. Spencer was the first child born to Gordon and Margaret, and was soon joined by siblings Scott, Dean, Susan, Wayne, and Shelly. Spencer spent his early years in Orange County, California, Detroit, Michigan, and Tarzana, California. He lived most of his adult life in Canoga Park and Agoura Hills, California.

Spencer is survived by his eternal companion, Katherine "Kathey" Jane Mackay, and their five children (and spouses): Lee (Jennifer), Craig (Jennifer), Brent (Brooke), Christy (Randall), and Evan (Kimberly). Spencer and Kathey are proud grandparents to 20 beloved grandchildren (and spouses): Hannah (Johnny), Rachel, Emma, Aaron, James, Luke, Benjamin, Lucy, Parker, Cole, Morgan, Alexa, Malia, Taylor, Ava, Daniel (Elena), Anna, Kaitlyn, Jonathan and Lily. He is now reunited with his parents, who preceded him in death.

An accomplished and highly respected businessman, Spencer was a Partner and later President of Emerson Johnson Mackay, a leading industrial design firm he eventually rebranded as M Industrial Design. His creativity extended beyond his professional work; he was a deeply talented artist, particularly passionate about capturing nature as well as everyday scenes in watercolor.

A dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spencer served for many years as Bishop of the Agoura First Ward. As a young man, he served a full-time mission in the South German Mission. Many years later, he had the sweet experience of returning to the Alpine German-Speaking Mission with his beloved Kathey to serve as senior missionaries from 2022 to 2023.

Spencer's life was marked by dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ, his wife, family and his community. His steady example of faith, kindness, humor, and humility will be remembered and cherished by all who had the great blessing to know him.
