Shirley's Life
Shirley Fickling, age 76, of Otsego, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at North Ridge Nursing Home in New Hope, MN. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose love and strength touched everyone who knew her.
Shirley was born on June 7, 1949, in St. Cloud, MN, to Herbert and Irene Theisen. She grew up in a large, close-knit family as one of eleven children, surrounded by love, laughter, and the strong values that shaped her throughout her life.
Shirley married Donald Fickling on February 23, 1974, and together they shared 25 wonderful, loving years of marriage until Donald lost his battle with cancer at the age of 56 in 1999. Shirley’s strength was deeply evident during this time; as a single parent, she re-entered the workforce at age 50 to provide for her two sons. She worked in housekeeping at Monticello Hospital for 15 years before she retired. Her dedication to her family never wavered, and she carried herself with grace, resilience, and unwavering love.
Shirley was known for her kindness, sense of humor, generosity, determination, and strong-minded personality. She devoted her life to creating a warm, welcoming home where family could gather, laugh, and feel loved. She had a passion for decorating and crafting beautiful displays that reflected her creativity and heart. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family—especially listening to stories, sharing laughs, and making memories with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
Shirley is survived by her children, Jeff (Chrystal) Fickling of Zimmerman, MN, and Donald Fickling of Otsego, MN; her beloved grandchildren Jaiden (22), Jace (16), Colton (14), and Jaxon (8); and her siblings Darlene (Kurt), Genie, Linda, Debbie, Sandy, Jane (Paul), Pam, Donna, Patty (Jeff), and Jack. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and her parents, Hubert and Irene.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers who supported Shirley over the past year, including medical staff, hospice providers, and dear friends whose kindness brought comfort during this difficult time.“Forever loved, forever missed.”
