About Shirley

In the early morning hours of Tuesday May 16th, Shirley Ann O’Bryan left her home on earth to meet her God and her loved ones who have gone on before. Shirley had turned 94 years old on April 30. She had been in a longtime battle against cancer. She had been living in her Daughter Loretta’s (David Sunderland) home in Andover, MN since December and was there with family, when she passed.

Shirley loved her God, her Family and her Country and served them faithfully in the best ways that she knew how. She would gladly give a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Shirley came into this world on April 30, 1929 to parents Virgle Guy Hamilton and Mabel Gladys Gerner-Hamilton. She had 2 older sisters, Betty, 2 years old, and Marjorie 1 year old. Four years later the family was blessed with another sister, Patricia.

Shirley was born in the small town of Geddes, South Dakota. After graduating from high school, she attended one summer of teachers training and went on to teach school in a small one-roomed school in rural South Dakota.

Shirley met her soon to be husband Charles O’Bryan while on a double date with her best friend Hazel Coates and Charles’ brother Dean O’Bryan. Charles & Shirley were married on April 20, 1948.

Charles and Shirley ranched in South Dakota for many years until buying a house and ranch in Bagley, MN in 1964. By the time they moved to MN their family had grown to include 7 children. Loretta Lynn, Michael Francis, Charles Lee (Chuck), Sandra Ann, Susan Dawn, Patrick Dale and Connie Jane. Their eighth and final child James Guy joined the family in 1966.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and sisters, her husband of 47 years Charles, two sons Mike and Chuck.

She is survived by her children Loretta & David Sunderland, Sandra Bebault, Susan and Woody Lundmark, Pat & Sharon O’Bryan, Connie & Tim Wark, and James & Cyndi O’Bryan, 19 grandchildren and numerous great & great-great grandchildren.
