A Man Who Never Met a Stranger (Obituary)

Shelby Ray Scott, Sr. was born on November 12, 1942, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Benjamin Franklin Scott, Sr. and Ida M. Scott (née Holloman). He was the third of four children: John Scott, Benjamin Franklin Scott, Jr., and Paul Scott. The family relocated from Hattiesburg to Los Angeles, California, in 1946. Shelby attended Carver Junior High School and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. At the age of 11, he accepted Christ as is Lord and Savior while attending Victory Baptist Church of Los Angeles.

In his youth, Shelby and his brothers enjoyed Saturday matinees at the bijou, where they watched sci-fi shorts and noir classic films. He and his brother Benjamin, Jr. were aficionados of zoot suits and early pioneers within the Southern California lowrider community.

In his early adult years, Shelby married Leaty Louise Scott. Their union welcomed three sons—Shelby Jr, Adrian, and Raymond. Although they later divorced, Leaty preceded him in death.

Shelby worked as an assembler at Ford Motor Company and also contributed his skills as a construction laborer. Known for his natural ability to strike up a conversation with just about anyone, Shelby's humor, warmth, and welcoming nature left an impression on all who shared a moment with him.

Shelby was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his nephews Benjamin "Benny" Scott, Jr. and Eric Scott, and his grandson by marriage Henry "CJ" Pittman, Jr.

He is survived by his sons Shelby Jr., Adrian, and Raymond, and Raymond's spouse, Brenda Scott; nephew Ray Williams, Sr., and his spouse, Sherry Williams; nieces Trina Williams and Shemicka Hill; grandchildren Christopher Scott, Chanelle Scott, and Jordan Culberson; grandchildren by marriage Britney S. Taylor, Cheryce Santoo and Sade Mejia; great-nephews and grand-nieces Ray Williams Jr., Porsche Hudson, Aaron Williams, Yejide Jackson, James Robinson, Erick Scott, Jr., Ericka Scott, and Diamond Scott; honorary grandson Tyryce Hammett; and a host of extended family and friends including, but not limited to, Gwendolyn Fields.

Shelby will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
