Sandra Jean Mathis
Sandra Jean Mathis passed away early morning on January 28th 2022 in Florida after a long fight with Alzheimer’s. She was 83.
Sandra Jean Richard was born on September 14, 1938 in Ottawa Ontario to Robert Richard and Janet Mohns. Sandra’s mom Janet married Percy Bassett in 1943, was adopted by Percy and became Sandra Jean Bassett.
The family moved to the United States when she was 17 and Sandra maintained dual citizenship with Canada and the US.
Sandra married Robert Winfred Mathis of Nashville Georgia in May of 1960. Sandra and Bob had 5 children together.
Sandra loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed visiting and spending time with them in their homes. She also enjoyed traveling to Canada, South Dakota, Blairsville Georgia and going on a cruise.
In 2014, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Sandra was cared for by her daughter Judy Greenwood & family in Vero Beach FL and daughter Jean Mathis Spry & family in Grand Marais MN.
Both families are thankful to their friends that loved spending time with Gramma Sandra and made her feel at home. Sandra also enjoyed Laura and Daniel’s band concerts in Vero Beach and playing cards and picking raspberries with Carly on the property in Minnesota. She had a special way with animals and all the dogs at each “home away from home” will miss her.
When traveling back and forth was not an option Sandra stayed full time with Judy and her family until 2019 when she became a resident of the Broadmoor ALF transitional memory care home. We are forever grateful for the love and care she received from the staff.
Sandra was a kind, strong, loving Mom and friend and will be forever missed by her children, grandchildren, bonus grandchildren and friends. Besides the great values and life lessons she taught her children she will also be remembered for teaching her grandchildren and bonus grandchildren the saying “my dinner side is full but my dessert side is empty”.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Winfred Mathis and brother John Bassett.
Sandra is survived by her daughters, Jean Mathis Spry (Randy)MN, Judy Greenwood (Bobby)FL and Janet Barna FL; sons Robert Gregory Mathis (Melissa) GA, James “Bo” Mathis (Diane) NC;
granddaughters, Carly Jean Puch, Laura Ann Greenwood, Charlotte and Valerie Barna, Kaleigh and Chayce Mathis;
grandsons, Daniel Robert Greenwood, Brooks Mathis (Bobbie), Tyler and Camden Mathis, Mitchell Mathis (Emily), Ian Higgins; great granddaughter Samantha Mathis. Bonus grandchildren Lexie Potter, Carrie Palmer, Paige and Jamie Greenwood. She is also survived by her sisters.
Our mom is at peace, she has her memories back and her body is whole once again.
