About Sam
Samuel Judson Goss, 92 of Laporte MN passed away April 15, 2024, at home with his loving family by his side.
Sam was born March 29, 1932, at the Bemidji hospital to Warren (Mike) and Reinholde (Rau) Goss. He went home to the family farm in Gossville where he grew up with his brother and sister and spent the rest of his life farming and making a home for his family.
He was baptized, confirmed and married in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended the Carlson Country School in Wilkinson Township and graduated from Cass Lake High School in 1950.
On October 22, 1960, he married his best friend, Madeline Schopper. Together they had a Guernsey dairy farm and raised Herford Beef and sheep. They also grew corn, oats, alfalfa and burbank russet potatoes which he sold to two grocers and at the market in St. Paul. Sam always said he started farming when he was 4 years old, and he farmed until he physically couldn’t. His farm was designated as a Century Farm in 2011.
He loved spending time with his family at Camp Gossville on Steamboat Lake where he enjoyed the camp food and watching the grandkids swim. Sam enjoyed Allis Chalmers Tractors, auction sales, visiting and ice cream. He especially enjoyed taking rides around the countryside. All his grandkids will remember their “trips around the world” with Grandpa (aka driving around the block to check on the farm). Sam served on the Wilkinson Town Board for 19 years and was a Fire Warden for 50 years.
Sam is survived by Madeline his loving, caring wife of 63 years; daughters, Heidi (Glenes) Ball, Marilyn (Paul) Chopp, Linda (Son) Tran, and Kimberly (Sheldon) Lagaard; and son, Karl (Lori) Humphrey; grandchildren, Tim Humphrey, Ryan Humphrey, Leah Humphrey, Kayla Littler, Karsha Reierson, Andrea Freye, Jessica Sajevic, Samantha Seamans, Ashley Tran, Lindsey Jensen and Matthew Lagaard and 16 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Goss who was killed during WWII, sister Marjorie Goss Anderson, Brother-in-law Eugene Anderson, and grandchildren Nicole Chopp and Erik Tran.
A special thanks to Dr. Will and the Hospice Nurses for the loving care he received.
