About Sally

Sally Mae Deschampe was born on December 7, 1958 in Grand Marais. She passed away on June 4, 2021 at North Shore Hospital.

Sally is survived by one daughter, Lena (Ricardo) Santos and four grandsons: Joao, Alessandro, Antonio and Gabriel.

Sally was known as “The Crocs Lady.” She loved BINGO, rummage sales, baking, reading, spending time with her brother, Al, and spending time with her grandkids.

Sally was a hard worker and gained many friendships throughout the years. Some of her jobs included Grand Portage Head Start, Grand Portage Clinic, School District 166, and various positions with the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino. She was honored to help many people as a volunteer E.M.T. in the Grand Portage community and helped deliver many babies as a delivery coach.

Sally had a special place in her heart for a young man named Sam. In Sally’s words, Sam gave her “The Gift of Life,” a kidney. After being on the list to receive a kidney for seven years and doing dialysis for three years, Sam was a match. In gratitude, Sally asked, “Please say a special prayer for Sam and his family. And if you can, please check the box so others like me are able to receive that long-awaited gift.”

Sally is preceded in death by her parents, Norman C. and Irene E. Deschampe; siblings Norman Jr. and two infant brothers, and sister-in-law Diane.

She is survived by siblings Mary Ann Gagnon, Larry “Fish” (Janis) Deschampe, Rosie (Rick) Novitsky, Allan Deschampe and Marlene (Joel) Allard, all from Grand Portage and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
