Richard "Rick" A. Coates

Richard "Rick" A. Coates, passed away on June 20, 2023 at home peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was 72 years old. The family is deeply saddened by his quick decline after a diagosis of cancer.

Rick grew up in St. Paul Park as the third oldest of his siblings, Gary, Sandy, and Kathy. He attended Park High School during which he played the bass guiter in a band. He loved music and would sing randomly when he was happy. After high school, he joined the Army Reserves and learned to fix trucks. This turned into a career as a diesel mechanic. He attended St. Paul Vo Tech and worked the majority of his career at Penske for over 36 years. When the kids were little, Rick moved to Cottage Grove and called it home for the rest of his life. As a family, he enjoyed camping, boating, and trips to his mom's cabin. Rick loved sports in all forms - whether it was watching the local Minnesota teams, playing hockey or softball, or coaching his kids. He was forever proud of his children and grandchildren, touting them as his greatest accomplishments. In retirement, Rick enjoyed golfing, cribbage, fixing things for anyone with a broken whatever, and gossiping with neighbors. He also spent time traveling and trips up to the cabin with Marcia. Rick will always be remembered for his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor, always telling jokes and stories to make everyone laugh. He made an impact on many lives. He will be missed dearly.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy.

Rick is survived by his significant other, Marcia; children, Rick (Mary), Mindy, Vanessa (Brendt) Runtsch, & Brittany (Adam Schumacher) Coates Miao; grandchildren, Drew (Brianna), Jordan (Priscilla), Kalynn (Mariah), Mu, Braden, Brady, Capri, Lucy, Fiona, Jacob, Mila, & Mikkel; great-grandchildren, Leonardo, Connor, Jaylen, Lila, & Jackson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A service will be held on Thursday, July 13th at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Woodbury, MN at 11am with a visitation starting at 10am and a celebration of life to follow at River Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove, MN.
