About Richard
Age 69, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully on his birthday, February 27, 2026.
Richard was born on February 27, 1957, in Sandwich, IL. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was an artist, maker, and creator. After the Coast Guard, he went to college to study art, where he learned computer-aided design and honed his skills in illustration and cartooning—lifelong passions that remained central to who he was.
Art was not just a creative outlet for Richard; it was also therapeutic. As a disabled veteran, Richard's health issues made life more challenging, but he never let that stop him from doing what he loved. Up to the end, he wanted to create.
In 2019, Richard met his life partner, Beverly Welo. They celebrated their commitment on June 6 of that same year and made their home together in Minneapolis.
Richard will always be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his thoughtfulness, and the way he always considered others. We could not have asked for a better partner, brother, uncle, and friend, and we will miss him every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Richard is survived by Beverly Welo; his brothers, Jim Striegel (Susan), Jerry Striegel (Colleen), Chris Striegel (Donetta), and Mark Striegel (Daniela); and his nieces and nephews, Ben, Emma, Jason, Kelly, Michael, and Adam. He is also remembered by his cousin, Maureen Grace; Beverly’s son, Brian; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Striegel.
The family would especially like to thank Megan and Richard's care team at the VA and Alex from Your Neighborhood Nurse for the kindness, care, and support they gave Richard during his final months.
