life story

A Rebellious Spirit With A Good Heart

About Randy

Randy was the kind of man you root for in the movies. A little rebellious, a lot of heart, and loyal to the bone. He lived by his own rules but he never lost his own code: family first, always. He may have found trouble, but he never caused harm. He just loved his people fiercely. Randy carried himself like that character in a film you cannot help but love. The rebel with a soft center. He believed in family in the deepest way. Strong values, strong love, strong presence.

He came up as the only boy in a house of girls — Debra just a little older than him and more like a second mom than a big sister, then Brenda, then Michelle bringing up the rear. It was his mother, Shirley, raising them on her own and doing the impossible, with Debra right beside her helping raise her only boy. That house was loud, tight, full of love and it made Randy fiercely loyal. Protective. The kind of brother, son, and uncle who would drop everything if family needed him.

He and Shirley shared a bond people could feel. He was close to his mother in a way that never faded — the way he talked about her, looked out for her, carried her with him. With Shirley having just passed so recently, we take comfort knowing those two are close together again.

He was our rebel with a good heart. Our lovable outlaw who loved harder than most saints do. And we wouldn't have wanted him any other way.

Loved and preceded very recently by his mother, Shirley Anne Surratt. Survived and cherished by his sisters Debra, Brenda, and Michelle, and by all the family who loved him right back.
