Dr. Pi-Nian Chang, 86, passed away on September 30, 2026. Born in Beijing, China, on September 28, 1940, Pi-Nian lived a life anchored by his Christian faith, academic dedication, and love for his family.

Pi-Nian arrived in the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship and earned his master's degree and doctorate at the University of Minnesota, beginning a long career in psychology devoted to children and families. He remained at the University, where he established the Pediatric Psychology program. As a clinician, researcher, and faculty member, Pi-Nian advanced understanding of children's mental and physical health, with pioneering contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and the care of children with complex developmental challenges. The Minnesota Historical Society featured his life story in its "The Value of One Life" exhibit in 2011.

Pi-Nian was also a disciplined athlete and a passionate Minnesota sports fan. A marathon runner and swimmer, he demonstrated a sense of perseverance to his training. He cheered faithfully for the Vikings, Timberwolves, and Gophers.

Pi-Nian is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter, Annette (Steven); his son, Carl (Jill); three grandchildren, Sidney, Kinsley, and Tommy; and great-granddaughter, Lennie.

Private service and interment at Lakewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Department of Pediatrics Children's Health Discovery Fund at the University of Minnesota Foundation.
