About Phyllis

Phyllis Labelle Sletten, 87, of Bagley, Minnesota went to her heavenly home on Thursday, January 19th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

Phyllis was born at her family home in Minerva, on June 11, 1935, to Rose and Ed Newland. She was raised in the home of her parents, with her 13 brothers and sisters.

Phyllis received her education at the Minerva country school. She completed the 8th grade there, as an adult she worked to receive her GED. She was baptized as an adult, at the parsonage in Shevlin, and later confirmed in Alida.

Phyllis was united in marriage, to Ervin Sletten, on November 3rd, 1951. They lived in Montana for two years and then moved back to Shevlin. Together they raised their 5 children, on their farm south of Shevlin. They lived on the farm until 1995, at which time they moved to Bagley. In May 2022, Phyllis moved to Cornerstone assisted living residence in Fosston.

She worked various jobs throughout her life. She worked 5 years as a home health aide. She was a summer youth supervisor for 2 years. She also worked one year as personal care assistant. First and fore most she worked countless hours on the farm raising her children, tending gardens, baking, and canning. And with a creative eye making her house a colorful, welcoming, cozy home. She was treasurer and president of Alida Church and treasurer of Alida School.

Phyllis was strong in her faith and loved the Lord. She spent every morning doing her bible lessons and having her tea. Family meant the world to her, and she loved spending time with them. A camping week was spent with the whole family at Long Lake, the past 25 years, that she always looked forward to. She had a passion for pretty things and bright colors. Her flowers were her pride and joy. She had the most beautiful flower gardens. At Christmas her whole yard was lit up with lights.

Phyllis is survived by her five children, Clyde (Leah) Sletten, Shevlin, MN, John (Dixie) Sletten, Odessa, TX, Roxann (Jeff) Trapnell, Holmen, WI, Glory (Mark) Koenig, Rugby, ND, Jamie (Riggie) Sletten, Bergen, Norway; 15 Grandchildren; 23 Great-Grandchildren; Four brothers, Mike (Arlene) Newland, Derwood Newland, Ronnie (Peggy) Newland, Dennis (Jeanette) Newland, sisters-in-law, Lillian Newland, Claudette Newland, and Evie Newland.

She is preceded in death by her parents Rose and Ed Newland; sisters, Mary, Doreen, and Arlene; brothers, Monroe, Charles, Garfield, Calvin, Garnett, and Elroy; mother and father-in-law John and Hannah Sletten; Grandchildren, Thad Sletten and Thea Sletten.

Grace Free Lutheran Church 642 Main Ave N, Bagley, MN 56621, USA

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Bagley. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Pastor Dale Adams will be officiating. Interment will be at the Alida Lutheran Cemetery in Alida Minnesota.
