Mitchell Michael Calhoun, 84, of Gary, Indiana, passed away on August 12, 2025. He was born on March 2, 1941.

Mitchell grew up in Gary, Indiana, where he worked alongside his father, Charles Calhoun, helping to run the family businesses. A man of many talents, Mitchell was a gifted photographer and an even greater painter, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and beauty through his work. He was recognized by the Dean at the University of Indiana for his outstanding artistic contributions.

Mitchell loved soulful music and took great joy in collecting records. Beyond his artistry, Mitchell had a passion for his custom truck and loved tackling advanced-level puzzles in his later years. He had a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor, keeping those around him smiling—even his nurses in his final days. Mitchell had a way of leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. And that creativity reflected in his clothing as well, he liked to look nice.

He is survived by his beloved children: Crystal Calhoun, Sarina Calhoun, Jennifer Calhoun, Pearline Calhoun, Phazon Calhoun, Micheal Calhoun, and Mitch Ward. He also leaves behind his loving siblings, Charlotte Calhoun, Emma Calhoun Smith, Charlotte Calhoun Joyner, Sharon Calhoun McKinney, Roderick Calhoun and Richard Calhoun

Preceded in death is his mother Prudence (Prudy) Wilson, father Charles Calhoun Sr., Charles Calhoun Jr and His beloved family dog Pepper

One of the many ways Mitchell lives on is through the words he often shared. His memorable phrases, full of humor and wisdom, continue to echo in the hearts of those who loved him:

• “Keep on, you gon’ be big as a house.”

• “I’m doing my time.”

• “I’m not gon’ talk you to death”—usually said while talking you to death.
