Michael Scott Buntzen
age 57, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, passed away following his battle with myotonic dystrophy and cancer. Born in Queens, New York, Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Cornelia Cross, who passed away while Michael was serving in the United States Navy. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Bette Buntzen; his sister, Deborah Buntzen (Terri Morgan); brothers, Derek Cherne (Michelle) and Franklin Buntzen (Sarah); nieces, Maya Cherne and Tessa Cherne; nephew, Adam Cherne; and many extended family members and friends.
Michael was a graduate of Wayzata High School, Class of 1987. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1987 to 1991, including service during Desert Storm aboard the USS Missouri. Michael was very proud of his military service and often spoke fondly of his shipmates and the experiences they shared. His service was an important part of who he was and something he carried with pride throughout his life.
Michael took great pride in his work and most recently worked for Abbott Laboratories in Plymouth, Minnesota. He was a hardworking and dedicated employee who was well liked by his coworkers and took pride in doing his job well.
Michael was a kind and generous person who cared deeply about his family and friends. He was especially generous with his nieces and nephew and took great joy in being their uncle. He was a man of few words, but those close to him knew his wonderfully funny personality and the humor that would come out when he was comfortable. He was loyal to the people he loved and was always someone his family and friends could count on.
Michael enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved 1980s music and watching classic television shows, especially Star Trek, Perry Mason, and Barney Miller. He was a passionate Minnesota Vikings fan and had what may have been an unmatched collection of Vikings fan gear. He also had a particular love for hot dogs and would happily have eaten them every day.
Michael was an animal lover, especially when it came to dogs. Among his favorites were Bandit, Arnold, Kirby, Fritz and Trixie. His love for animals brought him great happiness throughout his life.
Michael will be remembered for his kind soul, generosity, loyalty, quiet humor, and the genuine care he showed toward the people and animals he loved. He never needed to be the center of attention to make an impression. Those who knew him best understood the depth of his caring nature and the special person he was.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. A private burial with military honors will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
