Michael G. Kelly

August 24, 1956 – September 24, 2026

Michael G. Kelly, age 70, passed away on September 24, 2026.

Michael was a proud United States Navy veteran whose service reflected the values of dedication, integrity, and compassion that guided his life. He earned an Associate of Arts degree and later, while working as a janitor at the University of Minnesota, earned a certificate in ESL/EFL (English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language). His educational achievements reflected a lifelong commitment to learning, personal growth, and helping others. He took great pride in education and in supporting those seeking new opportunities through language and communication.

A gifted poet and artist, Michael viewed the world through a creative lens. He spent most of his adult life in Uptown Minneapolis, embracing the diversity, culture, and energy of city life. His poetry and artwork reflected his thoughtful nature, keen observations, and appreciation for the human experience.

Michael believed deeply in the importance of service to others. For decades, he was an active member of the Minneapolis recovery community, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon. He generously shared his experience, strength, and hope with countless people and was always willing to listen, encourage, and support those facing life's challenges. He believed that one of life's highest callings was to be of service.

His commitment to helping others extended throughout the community. Michael volunteered at local food shelves and participated in community gardens, where he cultivated not only plants but also friendships and connections. His kindness, humility, and generosity left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

Michael also shared a special bond with his beloved cat, whose companionship brought him comfort and joy. Following his passing, his cherished feline companion was lovingly rehomed with a fellow veteran, a fitting continuation of the care and connection that Michael valued throughout his life.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Joann E. Javes; his father, Thomas F. Javes; his brother, David A. Javes; and his sister, Suzanne E. Reed.

He is survived by his siblings, Daniel (Bridget) Javes, Julie A. (Ron) Ruch, and Sally E. Lubrant; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family members, friends, fellow veterans, and members of the recovery community whose lives were enriched by his friendship and example.

Michael will be remembered for his gentle spirit, creative gifts, dedication to personal growth, and unwavering commitment to helping others. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through acts of kindness, service, art, and fellowship.

May Michael find fair winds and following seas on his final journey. All Hail the Traveler. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
