About Mel

Melvin “Mel” Merle Becker, 85, Sebeka, MN passed away Monday, September 5, 2022 at Lakewood Health Systems in Staples, MN.

Mel was born in Minneapolis, MN to Stanley and Doris (Longerbone) Becker. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Minneapolis South High School.

On September 29, 1956 he was united in marriage to Virginia Boller. They made their home in Minneapolis; Denver, CO; Walker, MN; Aurora, CO; Chaska, MN; and retired to rural Menahga, MN. Virginia passed away in 2012. He remained in their home until recently when he moved to Sebeka, MN.

Mel loved art, carving, painting and especially loved music. He woke up each morning with a song on his lips. He loved playing his guitar for an audience whether it was for 1 or 1,000. When he had no one to play or sing for, he did so for himself. He always said, “I don’t sing because I’m happy, I’m happy because I sing.” He had a signature yodel which will be missed. The man loved his music.

Mel loved to hunt and fish. He liked playing cards and he was an avid storyteller. He was a perpetual dreamer, loved people, and loved his family dearly. He had the gift of gab and that’s what most people remember him for. We will miss you dad!

Mel is survived by his children, Curt Becker of Menahga, MN; Kim Hoban of Menahga; Brett Becker of Sebeka; Shawn Becker of Kimball, MN; Todd Becker of Maple Lake, MN; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; parents, Stanley and Doris; siblings, Richard Becker, Laura Selinski, and Donna Edstrom.
