Maxwell Ronald Emerson, 32, a Life of Curiosity, Creativity, and Heart
Maxwell Ronald Emerson, age 32, of Savage, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2026. Max was born on May 23, 1994, at Southdale Fairview Hospital to parents Timothy and Judy Emerson. In the weeks before his passing, Max shared treasured memories, photos, and stories with his family moments filled with nostalgia, affection, and reflection. He spoke often of his friendships, past adventures, and the people he loved, giving his family a final gift of closeness and connection.
Early Life
• From the very beginning, Max was a curious, energetic, and deeply loved child. As a toddler, his parents joked that they both needed to “stay alive forever,” because no one else could love him with the same patience and devotion required to keep up with his endless desire to explore and figure things out.
• Max was hands on from the start a natural inventor. When given his first computer, he immediately took it apart to understand how it worked. His father’s favorite bedtime memory was reading the Harry Potter series aloud to him. Each night, Max would say, “Don’t read ahead, Dad,” before falling asleep though Tim always did.
• Max adored his sister Quinn, and together they created imaginative “inventions,” testing them with the kind of creativity only siblings share. He played soccer, little league baseball, and enjoyed Cub Scouts and Webelos with his dad, especially the camping trips.
• A teacher once advised Judy and Tim to give Max things to read, solve, or research and they did. One memorable project involved smoking meat and cheese. His parents bought him a small Smokey Joe grill, and Max proceeded to smoke pounds of cheese and meat in the backyard, proudly sharing his creations.
High School Years
Max attended Prior Lake High School, where he built strong friendships and unforgettable memories. During his junior year, he asked his dad to coordinate a prom bus because other parents weren’t willing to take on the liability. Tim agreed and the adventure that followed became legendary. On the return trip from dinner, the bus broke down and caught fire on the side of Highway 169 in Eden Prairie. Thankfully, everyone was safe, and the story became one of Max’s most memorable high school moments.
Max didn’t have a traditional part time job, but he certainly had entrepreneurial spirit:
• Worm Farming: He raised mealworms and wax worms in the basement, selling several orders before the smell forced the business to close.
• Tarantula Breeding: Without his parents knowing, he ordered baby tarantulas and kept them hidden in a basement cabinet, buying and selling them online.
• Gaming Console Modding: His most ambitious venture involved modifying Sony handheld gaming devices by burning custom chips and rewriting embedded software to gain advantages in World of Warcraft. He quickly learned that customer support was a major part of running a business.
Education and College Life
• Max graduated from Prior Lake High School in 2013 and chose Iowa State University the only college he visited. His father, originally from Iowa, was thrilled.
• Max earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems, embracing his love for technology. On one occasion, he was called into the dean’s office after the security team discovered he had created an application that scraped class scheduling data every five minutes for five days straight. He learned a valuable lesson about cybersecurity that week.
• He loved Iowa State deeply especially fall football tailgating with his parents and friends. Tim often arrived with a trailer full of TVs, canopies, food, and energy. Max understood that his dad wanted to live through the college experience with him, and he welcomed it. His friends welcomed Tim too, at both football and Hilton Coliseum basketball games.
• Max often said his favorite day of the week in Ames was Sunday, when he and his roommates relaxed, watched TV, and enjoyed sports together.
Hobbies, Adventures, and the Outdoors
Max’s interests were wide ranging, passionate, and often bold:
• Beekeeping: Max kept beehives in the family’s Savage backyard. He proudly invited friends to experience beekeeping firsthand. On one memorable day, bees became trapped inside his suit and stung his face repeatedly leaving him swollen for a week, but still proud of his hives.
• Fishing and Hunting: As a child, he loved catching crayfish in Credit River. With his dad, he built a turtle trap and it worked.
• Ice Fishing: He cherished ice fishing trips with close friends and often spoke about how much he missed those Iowa State friendships.
• Gardening: Max loved growing peppers and making salsa and hot sauce with his mother, Judy, sharing their creations with friends.
• Photography and Technology: He flew drones, built home sensors, and tinkered endlessly with gadgets.
• Skydiving: After graduating from Iowa State, Max and a close friend celebrated by skydiving. He told his dad it was an adrenaline rush he carried with him for years.
Career
Max worked nearly ten years at U.S. Bank as a Mainframe Systems Engineer, beginning with a summer internship during college. His parents were incredibly proud of him. His boss described Max as enthusiastic, positive, and full of energy someone who lifted project teams with his spirit and determination. U.S. Bank was his first and last employer, and he will be deeply missed by his colleagues.
Faith
Max spoke occasionally about his belief in a higher spirit. The day before his passing, he said “Thank you, God” several times. His father smiled and said, “I knew you believed in the Lord,” in the gentle, humorous way they often shared.
