We celebrate Jo's life

The family of Mary Jo White, formerly of Belmont, NC, invites friends and loved ones to a memorial service celebrating her life on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 11 a.m. at South Point United Methodist Church in Belmont, where Jo was a beloved member for many years. Pastor Jesse Bowles from Authentic Church in Hickory—a family friend—will lead the service.

Jo peacefully passed away on October 23, 2024, at age 57, at Richmond County Hospice in Rockingham, NC, after a short battle with cancer. A longtime resident of Belmont, Jo had been living in Raleigh since 2015. While we are heartbroken, we are comforted that her faith is now sight as she is in the presence of her Savior.

Anyone who knew Jo can attest to her loving and sweet spirit. God gifted her as a caretaker, with patience that was truly grace-filled. She had the bluest, most innocent eyes, a gift for laughter, and a joy for singing along to her favorite music—most often Randy Travis—and occasionally breaking into exaggerated dance moves! She was also a faithful Carolina Panthers fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bucky and Jean Persinger; her birth parents, Donald “Bub” White and Ocie Rosier; her brother, Donnie White; and her brother, Tim White of Elkins, WV, who passed away shortly after Jo.

Jo is deeply missed and survived by her sister Donna Martin of Hoffman, NC, and her brother Cleve Persinger (Katie) of Charleston, WV. She is also survived by her sister Bertha White and Brother Brett White, both of Elkins, WV. Jo’s nieces and nephews include Alan, Bradley, Charlotte, Chris, Cy, Dylan, Heather, Sabrina, Tiffany, and Warner, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews, Jasmine, Jeremy, Kobe, Maelani, and Maerissa.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Peace Health Care and Ms. Kay, and the staff and nurses at WakeMed in Cary and Raleigh, and Richmond County Hospice for their compassionate care.

Losing Jo means missing her phone calls on every birthday, holiday, and anniversary—and perhaps most of all, her faithful prayers for her friends and family. But for Jo, all the sad things are now untrue. As Christians, we have this hope as well. Until we see her again …

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading" (1 Peter 1:3-4).
