life story

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. A kind and gentle soul.

Mary Fishbaugher Smith, age 90, of Eden Prairie, MN, formerly of Camp Hill, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Mary was a kind and gentle soul, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, a friend to many, and selfless and giving to the end.

Mary was born and raised in Winona, MN, the third of four children to Glenn and Dorothy Fishbaugher. She earned a degree in elementary education from Winona State University, with a year spent at Washington State University, where she met her husband, Jack, through a mutual friend. After college, Mary taught elementary school in Richland and Pullman, WA and Cedar Rapids, IA, where her middle three children were born. Mary, Jack and their family moved east for Jack’s work and made their home and their lives in Camp Hill, PA, for 49 years.

Mary touched many lives in her 20 years of teaching 3-year-old pre-school at Christ Presbyterian Church. She had a strong faith and was an active member and eucharistic minister at the Sacred Heart and Cathedral parishes in Harrisburg. Mary was fortunate to travel throughout Asia and Europe with Jack. She enjoyed the company of good friends, long phone chats, bridge clubs, annual family vacations on Minnesota lakes, and retreats with church friends at the Weston Priory in Vermont.

Mary was preceded in death by Jack, her husband of 65 years, and her older brothers John and Jim Fishbaugher. She is survived by her younger sister, Katherine (Jim) Fine of Cedar Rapids, IA, three sons, Mike (Jeanne) of Eden Prairie, MN, Steve (Jackie) of Bethel Park, PA, Bryan (Erin) of Fort Wayne, IN, and two daughters, Linda Saxton of Eden Prairie, MN, and Betsy (Larry) Selig of Wayland, MA, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
