About Marj

Age 85. Known lovingly as Marj, passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 85. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with service and visitation details to be announced.

Marj was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from Johnson High School. She later moved to Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where she worked as a civil servant for the U.S. Army for 30 years. While in Germany, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and traveled extensively, nurturing a deep love of learning and global culture.

A lifelong student, Marj was passionate about languages, history, art, religion, and philosophy. After retiring to Minneapolis, she continued her dedication to learning and service by volunteering as a tutor for youth at the Juvenile Detention Center and for immigrants learning English.

Marj was preceded in death by her parents, Marjorie and Glenn Hawks, and her niece Annette. She is survived by her siblings Glenn, Nancy, and Barb; nieces and nephews Debbie, Jeffrey, Brian, Richie, Tiffany, Melissa, Krista, and Michael; and many grandnieces and grandnephews, including Patty, Graciela, Giovani, Christian, Ezra, and Becca. She also leaves behind a wide circle of friends across the Twin Cities and around the world.

Marj especially enjoyed helping raise her grandniece Graciela and grandnephew Giovani. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, deep intellect, and love for others.

In her memory, donations may be made to organizations that provide low-cost services for cat owners—an enduring passion of hers.
