Margaret Adelaide Broderick

October 22, 1929 – November 27, 2022

Minneapolis, MN, USA

Margaret Adelaide Broderick (nee Johnston) passed away suddenly at the age of 93 years on Sunday, Nov 27, 2022, after a severe fall outside her residence at the Walker Care Suites in Edina, MN. She was attempting to “visit a friend in the neighboring building.”

Born in Minneapolis on Oct 22, 1929 as the daughter of Adelaide Laura Deason Johnston and Samuel Gowan Johnston, she had one brother, Paul Gowan Johnston, who preceded her in death in 2015. As an independent teenager, she travelled across town via streetcar to attend Roosevelt high school. After graduating in January 1948, she attended the University of Minnesota before marrying Dennis Edward Broderick whom she met while working as a soda jerk at Burch Pharmacy in Minneapolis. Margaret and Dennis lived in several states including Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Illinois where they raised 3 daughters before returning to the Twin Cities for their retirement years. Dennis preceded Margaret in death in 2004.

Margaret, known as “Mugs” by her school friends, was independent, strong-willed, loved to socialize over a glass of Franzia Pinot Grigio and talk about family genealogy, politics, and history. As a Girl Scout leader for one of her children, she fashioned hand puppets of the Beatles out of black socks including costume jewelry for Ringo and a hand-drawn backdrop on a bed sheet. She avidly enjoyed reading, traveling, good meals, politics, and watching news programs. Her greatest joy was attending family gatherings where she would regale everyone with stories of family history. Her love for everyone was palpable and in return, she was beloved by many.

Margaret is succeeded in life by her daughters Kerry (Ansel) Burditt of Metamora, IL, Kim (Jeff) Daugherty of Heyworth, IL, Kelley (Bill) Baldwin of Bloomington, MN, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held in the warm months of 2023 when Margaret will be interred with her husband Dennis at Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minneapolis.
