About Jack

Jack was a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was born and raised in southeastern Washington, the youngest of three children to John and Doris Smith. Jack graduated from Pomeroy High School and worked from an early age, including summers in the wheat fields surrounding town to pay for college. He earned a business degree from Washington State University, where he met his beloved wife Mary through a mutual friend. After college, Jack taught middle school math in Cedar Rapids, IA before working for Collins Radio Company. Jack, Mary, and their family moved east for Jack to work at Berg Electronics/DuPont. They made their home and their lives in Camp Hill, PA, for 49 years, well past Jack’s retirement from DuPont.

Throughout his life Jack was a joiner and a leader and served many organizations, including the West Shore School Board and the parish councils at Sacred Heart and the Cathedral in Harrisburg. He was also a long-time member of St Theresa. Jack was fortunate to see the world working for DuPont and, later, with Mary. He enjoyed the company of good friends, golf, playing bridge, woodworking, Sunday drives, annual family vacations on Minnesota lakes, and retreats with church friends at the Weston Priory in Vermont.

Jack is survived by his sister, Corleen Fisher of Clarkston, WA, Mary, his wife of 65 years, three sons, Mike (Jeanne) of Eden Prairie, MN, Steve (Jackie) of Bethel Park, PA, Bryan (Erin) of Fort Wayne, two daughters, Linda Saxton of Eden Prairie, MN, and Betsy (Larry) Selig of Wayland, MA, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
