About Lyle
Lyle Edward Oien was peacefully ushered into the presence of His Lord and Savior on April 27, 2024 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living, with family and caring staff by his side.
Lyle was born in Fessenden ND, on October 30, 1935 to Nels and Ruby Oien. He graduated high school from Halstad ND in 1954.
In 1958 he met and married the love of his life, Sylvia Hanson. They were blessed with four children, Tammy, Tina, Troy and Tyrone.
Lyle and Syliva made Park Rapids their home in 1962. Lyle eventually landed a job at Jack’s Outboard where he learned to be a small engine mechanic. That led him to opening Lyle’s Marine in Dorset. His marketing tagline was “Smile and leave it to Lyle.”
Along the way Lyle added school bus driving for the Park Rapids School District to his daily work. He became fondly known as “Uncle Lyle,” purposely creating genuine relationships with the kids and then making wooden cars, horses, and whistles for them for the holidays. To present day he would bump into those kids, now adults, who remembered him and his warm personality.
Prior to closing Lyles Marine in 1985, Lyle started working as a substitute rural mail carrier. He eventually transitioned from bus driving to becoming a full time mail carrier in the Hubbard and Long Lake areas, again making friends along the way.
Lyle was given the spiritual gift of serving. He was always asking his children and others, what he could do for them. He also had the gift of listening. He genuinely would inquire about one’s life and that of their family.
After his wife Sylvia passed away in 2018, Lyle moved to Summerfield apartments in Park Rapids and created new friends and renewed old friendships. The same happened when Lyle moved to Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Pak Rapids. He was a light to those around him, always with a smile and a positive spirit.
Lyle will be greatly missed by his children: Tammy (Ed) Hongess of West Fargo, ND, Tina (Greg) Peterson of Laporte, MN, Troy Oien (Vicki Laager), Tyrone Scott (Pon) Oien, Ray Eischens (son-in-law) and special friends Jeff and Judy Thielen, all of Park Rapids.
He will be also be missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Eric and Jaci Hongess (Pharrah, Hattie and Eliot), Ethan and Jenae Hongess, Garrett and Allyson Eischens (Natalie Nemeth, Levi and Blair Eischens), Adam and Emily Eischens (Avery and Amaya Eischens, Makenzie and Eden Nelson), Danielle and Joe Safratowich (Charlie, Aimee, Sadie,Teddy, and Sophie).
