About Lois

Lois Edith Dale, 102, of Bemidji, died Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Lois was born April 28, 1921, in Mankato, Minnesota, the daughter of Jacob and Alma (Polchow) Ulrich. Lois was raised on her family farm in Good Thunder, MN. She was a “YELL” Leader in her Senior year of high school and then went on to Mankato State University and was very involved in drama and theater productions. She went to teach Mathematics and English at Rapidan and Good Thunder schools for 2 years.

She married Herbert Clarence Dale, April 16, 1944, and they moved to Bemidji, MN for Herb’s job with the Minnesota State Highway department. In 1947 Lois and Herb had their one and only little ray of sunshine, Diane.

Lois was then a stay-at-home mom until she and Herb purchased the old Carr Lake School in 1973 and transformed the space into an art store and art consignment gift shop. Her dedication to the arts was unmatched, and her talented hands carefully framed the works of numerous local artists. Lois herself was a gifted artist, with her captivating pieces bringing vibrancy and beauty to many lives. Lois was Diane’s oldest, and longest participating student in Diane’s Dance Studio and she had the highest kicks!

Lois Dale will forever be remembered as a pillar within the artistic community, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will continue within the walls of The Old Schoolhouse she so passionately preserved. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bemidji where she was involved in various organizations.

Lois was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herb, who was her rock and constant companion and her daughter and son-in-law Diane and Terry Halverson. Lois will forever be remembered by her precious twin granddaughters Katie (Eric) Meulebroeck of Bemidji and Amy (Pete) Edwards of Sunrise, FL. She had a very special bond with both of them!
