About Leo

Leo Anderson, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 85 on November 11, 2024, in Bemidji, Minnesota. Born on September 23, 1939, in Minneapolis, his passing on Veterans Day serves as a poignant reminder of his dedicated service as a proud United States Army veteran.

Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old. Over the next 24 years, he was repeatedly called back to active duty, including a one year tour in Vietnam. After his active-duty tenure, he planned to continue in the Army Reserves until retirement, but a severe semi-truck accident ended his military career. His time in the military was a source of great pride for Leo.

Leo discovered his second calling on the open road. Leo spent over 30 years as a long-haul trucker, satisfying his love of exploring America's history. His journeys provided countless opportunities to meet new people and discover historical sites along the way.

Throughout his working life, Leo wore many hats. Leo spent time as a sheep rancher, worked on the Rambler assembly line, and worked as a custodian for the Cass Lake School District. In retirement, he kept busy test-driving cars in winter and working in the maintenance department at the Bemidji Walmart.

In 1968, Leo married the love of his life, Patricia Anderson. Together, they made their home in Cass Lake, Minnesota, where they raised three children, Leo Jr., Melanie and Thomas. They shared a deep and abiding love until Patricia's passing in 2009.

Later in life, Leo joyfully discovered and welcomed three more daughters into his family.

Leo cherished his role as a grandfather and took immense pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also proudly held the position of favorite uncle among his many nieces and nephews.

Leo will be deeply missed by all who knew him. As he "went west," he leaves behind precious memories, lasting friendships and love for telling great stories that will be fondly remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, and his beloved wife, Patricia.

He is survived by his six children: Leo Anderson (Amanda) of Bemidji; Melanie Anderson of Cass Lake; Thomas Anderson (Christy) of North Dakota; Dawn Bullion (Tom) of St. Paul; Dawn Mead-Felger of New Jersey; and Tammy Tingstöm (Leif) of Stockholm, Sweden; along with fourteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
