About Lawrence

Age 87 passed away December 12, 2022 after a short stay at the St. Could Veterans medical and Hospice center. Larry and his family were extremely pleased with the comforting, and compassionate staff who no matter how busy treated him as if he was their only patient. He was born during the great depression to Roman and Marie(wolf) Schefers at Richmond, MN. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his first wife Bernice and second wife Opal 03/22/22. And survived by brothers Roger, Jerry, Elmer, and Melvin, and step son Doyle Daughry who lived with them and graciously helped them with driving and personal needs allowing them to stay at home. He spent most of his adult life in Waite Park and a few years in St. Stephen & St Cloud . He proudly served his Country in the Navy for 3 years during the Korean war with most shore leave spent in Japan. After being honorably discharged, he bounced around at a wide variety of jobs from work with a traveling carnival, to a traveling Accident and health Insurance Agent driving a big Packard for show in rural ND. He finally found the career he loved most as a nurse’s assistant at the St Cloud VA medical center caring for severely disabled veterans. He worked there for nearly 30 years cheerfully caring for and making their lives better, and few ever did more than he did for them. He was never famous for being a good business man in the two businesses he started, Larry’s Bait Shop and 4 Baby & Up a used children’s clothes shop. He had a few good Ideas but his generous heart of giving needy kids free candy or fishing equipment or clothes killed his businesses. He loved to fish, play whist & cribbage, shoot pool, and dance and listen to old time music. He was always cheerful and no matter the time of day or it was good or bad he always answered the phone GOOD MORNING. and end the call with GOD BLESS. He served as an Altar boy in his youth, and was a practicing Catholic his entire life but missed the use of Latin . By his wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service. He spent some time as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels with Catholic charities and wanted memorials to them.
