life story
Loving Husband, Father, and Uncle
Larry Karl Dahl, 63, of St. Paul passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Larry is preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Jane (Beckman), and brother Ronald. He is survived by his wife Donna of 32 years, children: Katelyn (Cedric), Michael, and David and his great nieces Addyson and Isabelle. He is also survived by his brother John (April), many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and two beloved pets, Shasta “Whiskers” and Foxy “Mittens”.
Larry was born on November 6, 1957 in Minneapolis, MN. He grew up on the “farm” in Blaine with Mom, Dad and brothers, John and Ron. Chores included feeding animals, cutting the lawn, and splitting wood. There were many stories he liked telling about the farm and the animals including “Charlie” the chicken, “Barney” the dog, and “Gimp” the pig who was found and captured one day near the drive-in east of the farm and since lived in the chicken coop believing it was a chicken.
During his teen years, Larry began working at the drive-in movie theater. He started by picking up after the shows, then working the snack bar, running the projector, and later managed several theaters. Larry also worked for his older brother John doing masonry and concrete growing up. He decided to use his experience in the concrete business to become a contractor and built single family homes for 10 years. Larry changed careers after he was married and was an Ironworker for 22 years. He was nearing retirement from the local 512.
Larry started dating his wife, Donna, in 1984, and were married in 1989 at the Church of St. Joseph. They had 3 children: Katelyn, Michael, and David who are now grown. Larry and Donna opened their hearts and home to caring for his great nieces Addy and Izzy, whom he thought of like daughters. He spent much of his time thinking of his children, reminding them to call their mom, change the oil in their cars, attend upcoming dentist/doctor appointments, and to always let him know when they got home after a family gathering.
Larry enjoyed spending time with family in the backyard with bonfires and outdoor movies, taking trips, camping, boating, and having relaxing weeks at the family timeshare. Larry worked on cars when he was young, even entering a car in the Anoka demolition derby. He continued to do as much work on his own and his children’s cars as he could. Larry was an avid deal finder, a la Goodwill, “swooping”, and Craigslist. He found many unique items, as well as things that were needed or interesting to have around the house. Larry will always be remembered for his genuine hospitality, and for sharing a memorable story of his experiences with others and enjoying a great laugh about it.
