Kevin James Shanahan
February 18, 1951 – August 2, 2021
St Paul, MN, USA
With heavy hearts, the family of Kevin Shanahan share that he passed away of natural causes at his home on August 2, 2021.
Born in Crookston, MN on February 18, 1951, Kevin enjoyed an active childhood camping, canoeing, playing high school football, alpine skiing and swimming, and was certified as an Eagle Scout. Following his graduation from Mount Saint Benedict Academy, he earned degrees from the University of New Mexico and San Francisco State University. Kevin's career provided him with opportunities to work as an educator and consultant in the field of Early Childhood Education, and as a painter in his later years.
Kevin was known for his big smile, storytelling, willingness to lend a helping hand and especially his love of the outdoors, whether with the Shanahan family at Lake of the Woods or with his friend, Richard, at his cabin. He had a strong interest in food and spent many happy hours of food preparation with his Uncle Wilfred and Aunt Evie Buhl, friends and family.
Kevin shared 28 loving, adventurous and joyful years with his partner Betty Couette and was hearbroken by her passing in December 2017. They found their paradise in Port Aransas, Texas, staying many winters and becoming part of the community. They also developed many friendships through their involvement with the B-Dale club in St. Paul, MN.
Kevin was the primary and loving companion and caregiver of our Mom, especially as her needs increased over the years.
A loving brother and uncle, Kevin made frequent treks to visit his nieces and nephew in Canada. A partner in crime, he taught them how to sneak treats, engage in water battles and happily played games with a sparkle in his eyes. He loved to hear about their careers and families throughout the years. Kevin and Pat enjoyed impromptu adventures, sharing their love of boating, fishing, swimming and hiking around Lake Superior, as well as challenging games of tennis and Ping-Pong.
Kevin will be greatly missed by his brother Patrick (Mona), nieces Jessica (Chris) Sharpe and Megan (Mike Aguiar) Shanahan, and nephew Julian (Taylor) Shanahan, 4 special little ones, Abigail, Isla, Jack and Miles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his partner Betty Couette and parents Austin and Myrtle Shanahan.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
