life story

Joseph James Johnston, age 40, of Bloomington, MN, passed away on July 16, 2025, with family by his side after a long and courageous battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Joe was born in Rochester, MN to Steven Johnston and Deborah Frey on April 19, 1985.

Joe was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 5. At the time, doctors estimated he might live into his early twenties. Thanks to the love and care of his family, and Joe’s remarkable strength and spirit, he defied those expectations and lived twice as long.

Joe graduated from Mayo High School in 2004. He lived at home with his mother for many meaningful years, and later in life, moved into a care facility where he received ongoing care. From a young age, Joe enjoyed playing video games. In the last few years, he used technology to work around his disability and kept enjoying playing his favorite video games. When visiting Joe, you would find him enjoying music on his computer or watching his favorite shows and movies. Over the years, Joe shared a bond with all of his pets, who provided him with companionship and comfort.

Joe is survived by his father Steven Johnston; stepfather John Frey; siblings Samantha (Kiel) Davis, Dustin (Lindsey) Rone, Adam (Nicole) Frey, and Andrew Frey; nieces and nephews Eli and Ada Davis, Marshall, Hadley, and Josie Frey; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother Deborah Frey, grandparents, Edward and Gloria Hanenberger, James Johnston, and Marlene Johnston.

The family is planning for a celebration of life on August 16, 2025 from 1-4 PM at the American Legion in Rochester, MN. Address 915 21st Ave SE Rochester, MN 55904.
