Born in St. Paul to John Joseph and Ellen Theresa Kenny, both Irish immigrants, John was the second of five children. He grew up in a close-knit family with his siblings—Tom, Mark, Kevin, and Maureen—remaining inseparable throughout their lives. Even as they built families of their own, the bond between them never wavered, and their children became more than cousins; they became, and remain to this day best friends.

Family was the cornerstone of John’s life. Raised in a loving Irish household, he understood the value of connection and togetherness. In June of 1977, he married the love of his life, Dawn Marie Gierke. Their love stood the test of time, and Dawn was steadfast by his side, especially during his later years as his health declined.

John had a deep passion for classic cars, a love that defined much of his life. As a long-time member of the Minnesota Street Rod Association—proudly holding membership number 343—he built and restored many cars, including a cherished 1933 Ford with his children. His first car, a 1937 Dodge, was a lifelong possession that he planned to pass down to his youngest son. John’s passion for cars and car shows was undeniable—he rarely missed Back to the Fifties, with his wedding being one of the only exceptions.

John was a devoted father to his three sons—Ryan, Michael, and John John. His love for cars and family influenced them deeply, and they proudly carry on his passions and values. His greatest joy came from being a father, and he was eagerly looking forward to becoming a grandfather to his soon-to-arrive grandson, John.

Known for his warm heart and generous spirit, John was always ready to lend a helping hand. He had a gift for storytelling, captivating rooms with his tales, and bringing laughter to all who listened. His impact on those he loved will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come.
