life story

Loving Father and Loyal family man

Dad, we thank you for being a wonderful caring father and grandfather. You always gave your time and love generously to your family and friends and made this world a better place with your heart, your positive outlook and your smile. You brought goodness and honor to your family and this world.

A Family Man Legacy

John Milo Hahn, loving father and grandfather, passed away on September 21st 2024, one week shy of his 96th Birthday. John is greatly missed by family and friends as he made our world a kinder place.

John, or Johnny as his extended family knew him, lived his long life humbly, and with humor, remaining devoted and loyal to his loved ones and his Christian faith.

John is survived by his 3 daughters, Jill Marie, Amy Josephine and Mary Francesca Ricketts (Joshua) and his cherished grandchildren Spirit Victoria, Josephine Frances (Katie), Caleb John and Eve Elizabeth (Evie). John was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Sandra Carolyn Hahn (Hunstad) and his infant son Timothy John who was forever remembered and honored by his parents. John's family was always first in his heart and he centered his life around caring for them, providing for them and sharing his kindness generously with others along the way.

He was born in 1928 in Madison, South Dakota, the third oldest in his family of 10 siblings; to parents John Adam Hahn and Frances AnnaBertha (Voeltz). John was raised on the farm, growing up in areas near Chester and Colman, South Dakota. He learned to work hard early on in life and the strength he built lasted well into his older age. He is survived by his brother Rodney Hahn and Sister Sandra (Jim) Hanson as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Willard, Miles, Amos, Mortimer (Morty), Ardis (Christensen), Delda (Inberg) and Lana Hahn.

An Army Veteran, he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War efforts, and used his affinity for math to decode messages in the war. John honorably served his country for three years before returning home to devote his time and energy to family and friends. John left a legacy of helping others from his time tending farm for his Uncle Pat and Aunt Josie, to the many years he spent helping care for his Mother Frances in Colman, SD and then in Minneapolis, MN after they moved in 1967.

Following God's Will to relocate to Minnesota, led John to meet his love and future wife, Sandy. He wed his dance partner and bride of 48 years, Sandra (Sandy) on November 22nd 1969. Together they raised their three daughters in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and regularly attended St. Phillips Lutheran Church in Fridley. John was meant to be a Dad, he was selfless and dedicated his life to his family, working hard to provide and protect them. He took joy in helping his children experience the important parts of life; sharing family time, playing together and growing in Faith together as he drove his family to Church most every Sunday morning.

John's legacy is of a true family man and loyal friend. His family will always remember the generous heart he shared. He invited his family into all aspects of his life from his hobbies of bowling in leagues (with his wife as partner), bringing family golfing (and a passion for mini golfing that continued into his 90's) and frequenting favorite restaurants together. He always welcomed others to join in the fun as no one felt left out if he could help it. John would spend most Sunday afternoons taking friends and family out to dinner and making sure to provide rides to those in need of errands and of course he would find time to play a game of cards with them. A favorite pastime with friends and family was playing many card games, especially cribbage and whist. When he was younger he enjoyed pinochle especially while on vacation in South Dakota with family. As he grew older kings in the corner became a favorite. Every weeknight after dinner his family knew where he would be at 6:30 pm as he was one of the world's most loyal Wheel of Fortune fans. Having a social nature, he also greatly enjoyed talking with friends and family on the phone. He knew well how to give a "Minnesota goodbye" wether in person or on the phone (never leaving without a minimum of three plus farewell attempts).

John walked thousands of miles and brought even more thousands of smiles to others in his 22 year career as a U S. Postal carrier. John met many friends on his mail route as people gravitated towards his kind and friendly manner. The kids on his route would greet him at his mail truck window and he would share the extra cookies he bought from the bakery, making sure to have enough for everyone. Even the dogs on his walking route knew him as a friend.

John continued to look out for and care for his daughters, his wife, his mother-in-law and friends in need even in his older age; he kept his friends for life. He gathered others to play cards together at his Nursing home these last few years. He chatted up his fellow residents and continued to make new good friends.

He loved to share with others about his grandchildren. Grandpa John always asked his grandkids how they were doing, how school was going and he made sure they were given an extra hug from him. His love was felt strong even when across the miles.

We greatly miss him and the joy he shared; and we take great comfort in the knowledge John is with our heavenly Father and reunited with his wife and son and loved ones in Heaven. May he rest in peace.
