About Joane
Joane Patricia Hanson, nee Woehl, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2021 while under the loving care of Hospice of Red River Valley and the dedicated staff at Crystal Brook Memory Unit of Park Rapids, Minnesota.
Joane was born on October 13, 1942 and spent her early years on the family farm in Wishek, North Dakota. Later the family left the farm and moved to Bismarck, North Dakota where Joane graduated from Bismarck High School in 1960.
On November 20, 1965, Joane was united in marriage to Ralph Hanson and her daughter Stacey was born in Bismarck in April of 1971. In 1972, Ralph was transferred to Fargo, North Dakota where her son Ross was born in January of 1977.
Joane soon commenced employment with Metropolitan Federal Savings and Loan. She considered her fellow employees there as part of her family and these friendships continued throughout her life. This was her dream job and she loved every minute of it. Her entire career after High School was spent in banking and she retired as a mortgage loan officer for Metropolitan Federal Savings and loan in Fargo, North Dakota in 1994.
Following her retirement, Ralph and Joane traveled extensively and took many cruises and land trips to Europe, Russia, Australia and China. She also took a lot of "fun" jobs to occupy her time including working at corporate tents at professional golf tournaments.
Joane lived in a number of different homes, including homes in Bismarck, Fargo, Dent, Minnesota, Mesa, Arizona, and Park Rapids, Minnesota.
Our granddaughter once asked her mother the definition of Gypsy, and her mother replied that it was someone who moved around a lot. The granddaughter replied, you mean like Nanny and Papa. She made every house a home.
Joane will be remembered as an incredible crafts person. She was especially skillful at cross stitch work and her creations were works of art which she enjoyed giving to family and friends. She was a gracious host for many get-togethers at her home and the family would wake up in the morning to the smell of her delicious caramel rolls.
Joane was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Esther Woehl, and numerous other aunts and uncles and her sister-in-law, Marcella Hanson Olsen. She especially grieved the loss of her brother-in-law Leonard Christensen.
Joane is survived by Ralph, her husband of 56 years; sister Gerry of Bismarck, ND; niece and nephew, Rhonda Leet of Bismarck and Darby Christensen of Phoenix, Arizona and their families; son, Ross and his wife Kristina and grandson Henrik; daughter Stacey; son-in-law, Patrick Heising; and grandchildren Chase, Natalie and Brynn. She doted on all four of her grandchildren and their successes and accomplishments brought her great joy. She also is survived by her brother-in-laws, Donald Hanson of Surprise, Arizona and Kenneth Hanson of San Diego; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Joane would have wanted to extend a special thanks to Pastor Neubauer for his comfort in her final days and to the incredible staff at Crystal Brook Memory Unit of Park Rapids and to Hospice of Red River Valley. They made her final days comfortable and secure. They are shining examples of the good that still remains in an otherwise troubled world.
