Joan Dorothy Schellinger

life story

Celebrating life with her martini in hand.

At the conclusion of a peaceful day, on August 22, at the age of 93, Joan entered into the waiting arms of God and her dear husband, Peter, her daughter, Nancy Lee; sister Diane; and parents Louise and Axel.

Joan will live on in the hearts of her children Barbara (Eugene), Dan (Leslie), and Jeff (Sharon); grandchildren Heather (Howard), Patrick (Amanda), Lee (Jenny), Eugene, Brandon, Allissa (Garrett), and Liliana; great-grandchildren Annika, Vera, Alice and Liam; and many family relatives and friends.

As a first year student at UW Stout, Joan met Pete and knew “he was the one”. They married in August 1950 and Joan transferred to the University of Louisville to accompany Pete as he taught Industrial Arts. Upon graduation in 1952, Joan worked at the Milwaukee Electric Company as an electrical appliance demonstrator and educator. In addition to providing a loving home complete with amazing meals, beautiful flower gardens, watercolor paintings, and copious volumes of books, Joan pursued her love of literature by completing her Library of Science degree.

In their late 40’s, Joan and Pete followed their hearts to Clear Lake, WI to co-own Schellinger's Maple Valley, an independent maple syrup farm, making maple syrup for natural food co-ops and farmer's markets in the Twin Cities of MN. Joan always had a large atlas at her side, reliving travels completed with Pete and their children throughout North America. During retirement, Joan traveled extensively with Pete, spending many winters in Las Cruces, NM and Sebring FL. As a lover of good food and gardening, she passed those skills on to her children and grandchildren while also leaving her mark in many homes, gardens and backyard projects. Her legacy will be carried in our hearts always.
