About Jeffrey Leo
Jeffrey “Jeff” Leo Gainey, accomplished educator, publisher, and banker died Sunday, March 23, 2025, in South Bend, Indiana. He was 74.
Jeff was born in Ithaca, New York, on November 29, 1950, to parents, Thomas Patrick and Helen Marie “Dutchie” Gainey, both of whom predeceased him.
During Jeff’s early education, making his beloved grandmother (Josephine "Mame" Mellberg) unendingly proud, Jeff attended King's Preparatory (formerly, Saint Andrew's Seminary) in Rochester, New York. There, he met the Flaherty family who he valued as his friends and brothers.
Jeff then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Japanese Language and Theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1972. His academic pursuits included a transformative year studying at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, where he traveled extensively participating in traditional festivals and joined the Japanese Archery Club.
Jeff's love for education and literature fostered a legacy of service and mentorship that extended from Minneapolis to New Jersey, throughout the Notre Dame community, and beyond. Jeff began his academic career teaching at the Academy of Holy Angels, an all-girls Catholic high school in Richfield, Minnesota. Jeff went on to teach chronically absent high schoolers at Paterson, New Jersey’s Eastside High School. Under Jeff’s tutelage, 96% of his students started coming to school. The security guard at a New Jersey hospital, where Jeff was visiting his mother with his sister and niece, recognized Jeff and thanked him for the education Jeff gave him decades prior when Jeff taught at Eastside High School. He expressed profound appreciation for the difference Jeff made in his life.
After completing his MBA in International Business from Notre Dame in 1984, Jeff continued his diverse professional journey that spanned three distinct careers, serving as Vice President and Problem Commercial Loan Workout Strategies Officer at Norwest Bank (formerly, First Interstate Bank), where he managed a portfolio of 40-50 problem commercial loans.
His career then transitioned to publishing, where he spent ten years as Associate Director of the University of Notre Dame Press. During this time, he returned to teaching in addition to his responsibilities at the Press. Jeff was particularly proud of his work educating first year students and getting them acclimated to college life at Notre Dame. Jeff is remembered by the numerous treasured connections and friends he made while a student at Notre Dame and during his time at the Press. Jeff went on to become Director of the University of Scranton Press where he served in that capacity for nearly a decade. In publishing, he oversaw all aspects of operations from sales and marketing to author relations and project acquisition.
A man of remarkable versatility, Jeff served as a facilitator, educator, guide, counselor, and leader throughout his career. His deep appreciation for language and theology reflected Jeff's belief in the power of communication and spiritual connection. Known for literally giving those in need the coat off his back in the blistering cold of a South Bend winter, he was awarded the Man of the Year award in South Bend, Indiana.
Jeff's life embodied the values of intellectual curiosity and Catholicism. Those who knew him will forever remember his thoughtful guidance, quiet wisdom, and the profound impact he had on their lives.
