Celebrating Jim’s Life
James “Jim” Donald Harlander, born on February 19, 1952, departed this world on July 5, 2025. He was a true jack-of-all-trades, and his life was a tapestry of creativity, generosity, and adventure.
Jim was the devoted father of Alexander, Benjamin, and Anneliese, and grandfather of Luna and Shiloh, who will forever carry forward his legacy of curiosity, humor, and wholehearted kindness. He is also survived by his siblings Sue, Jan, Dave, and Judy.
Jim lived much of his life in Benicia and was living with his wife Dawn Ware in Bend, Oregon, at the time of his death. He is survived by his former wives Nancy Harlander, the mother of his children, and Susan Harlander.
He was a master woodworker and an accomplished general contractor, having built and repaired homes, boats, and guitars. He graduated from the Culinary Arts Institute of America in St. Helena, and made the most delicious breads, cakes, pastries and home cooked meals. His passion for the arts especially came to life when he played his guitar, and he crafted multiple songs for his loved ones.
Jim loved the ocean and was a skilled sailor, fisherman, and boat builder. As a boy, he had inspiration and guidance from his father, Don Harlander, and uncle Les Harlander, who built a 39-foot yawl in the backyard of Jim’s family home in Orinda, California. They taught Jim how to sail, and in the ensuing years he sailed the Pacific on multiple yacht races and voyages.
His love for the sea also led him to Alaska, where he worked as a crab fisherman in his late 20s. He served in the Marines, stationed in Hawaii, and had fond memories of running on the beach and body surfing with his comrades.
A well-traveled soul, he delighted in exploring new places and cultures, most recently when he and Ben visited Anneliese in Uganda, where he swan dived off a bridge on a bungee jump over the Nile.
He was a jovial and fun-loving guy who loved to enjoy a good meal, have a few beers, and laugh the night away with family and friends. He equally found pleasure in quiet moments with a good book or simply being among loved ones.
Those who knew Jim will remember his ready smile, sense of humor, resourceful spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. He sought out wonder in every day, found music and meaning in the smallest details, and inspired those around him to do the same.
Though he has set sail on his final voyage, the mark he leaves on the world — and on the hearts of those who love him — will remain as steady as the tides. Jim’s journey continues in the stories, songs, and memories we share. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered always.
