They called him "Butter"...

Herb Hakes was so passionate about the Dairy Industry, his brothers called him "Butter". As a teen, he spent summers with his Uncle Boyd at Hakes Dairy in Aitkin. From then on, Herb knew he wanted to follow in his Grandpa Herb, Father Ken and Uncle Boyd's footsteps to work in the milk business. In1956 he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Dairy Industry. His 40-year career spanned from the production floor to Vice President at Kemps Marigold. And, he loved every minute of it.

Herb's oldest son was the fourth generation of the Hakes Family to work in the Dairy Industry. Herb and his wife, Shirley, had three children: Sue (b. 1957), Bob (b.1959) and John (b.1965). And, they were crazy-in-love with their grandchildren: Meghan & Christopher, Ally & Jake.
