Henry John Etten

December 16, 1937 – October 20, 2026

Roseville, MN 55113, USA

Henry John Etten passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 20th, surrounded by his family.

Henry was born and raised in Boyd, WI. He spent time in Boston and in Iowa before settling in Minnesota where he met his wife Patricia while studying at the U of MN. He taught English to Deaf and hard of hearing students for 36 years in the St. Paul Schools and then continued part time teaching evening courses and community education courses until the onset of the COVID pandemic.

His passion for teaching English was anchored in his love of words and stories and sharing that love with others. He read books and history, enjoyed painting and music, and loved his family, national parks, all dogs and birds. He disliked squirrels and spicy food. He loved telling family stories and since the accuracy of details were not his strength, always stated that one should “never let the truth get in the way of a good story”.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia and by his three children, Sarah (Casey), Jason (Jessica), Michael and four grandchildren. Also survived by his foster siblings, Jim (Linda) and Marlene (Joe). Services will be held November 21st at St. Michaels Lutheran church in Roseville and an ASL interpreter will be available. Visitation will begin at 2:00 followed immediately by the service at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Keystone Community Services or The Pillars Hospice Home.
