About Helen

Helen Marie Smith Calvin, 93, of Willmar, MN laid down her burden and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Havenwood Care Center.

Helen was born August 15, 1930 in Traverse County, MN, the daughter of Edwin and Emma (Nelson) Propp. She was raised and graduated from Willmar, MN. She got her teachers training and taught in South Dakota and Minnesota.

After marriage, she worked hard as a farm wife, raised her children and took care of the home. She later became the first woman to be a county assessor in Minnesota for Traverse County, working for 15 years. In her early years and after retirement she enjoyed traveling the world with her husband. She also enjoyed gardening and her geraniums.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn (James) Townsend, Clinton Smith, and Krista (Reed) Fuglseth, 5 grandchildren, John, Elizabeth, Rebekah, Toran, and Nicole, and 6 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wesley Calvin, and brother Stanley Propp.
