life story

It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Hector Manuel Ayala Rivera on March 25, 2025, at the age of 78, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Hector was born in Puerto Rico and also spent his final years there. However, he lived many meaningful years in Vineland, New Jersey, where he raised his children and worked for the State of NJ in the Housekeeping Department of the Veterans Memorial Home. Hector proudly referred to himself as “Hector the pool player from Dorado.” He took great pride in the game of billiards and the friendships it brought him over the years.

He passed peacefully at home, just as he wished, surrounded by his loved ones—his daughter Cristina Ayala, his devoted wife Justa Maria Padilla, his stepsons Ruddy Castillo and Rafael Padilla, and his granddaughter Raysa Castillo.

In addition to those who were by his side in his final moments, Hector is survived by his loving sister Maria Irma Ayala; his children Joey Lyden and Diana Melendez; and his grandchildren Leilani, Ariana, and Jayden Melendez. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and close friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Saira Ayala; his sister Saira Ayala, whom he considered a mother; and his stepsons Sandy, Pablo, and Tony Maysonet.

Hector will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and constant willingness to help anyone in need. He made a lasting impact on countless lives and brought joy and strength to everyone who knew him.

Hector did not wish to have a formal service. Instead, his family and friends gathered to celebrate his life, and a prayer service was held in his home in San Juan, PR. Per his wishes, his ashes will be brought to Sacred Heart Cemetery in Vineland, NJ, where he will be reunited with his daughter, Saira Ayala, and a small prayer and memorial service will be held in his honor. In his final moments, Hector shared that he saw both his daughter and his sister waiting for him—a peaceful vision of reunion that brings comfort to those left behind.

Hector was truly loved, and his memory will live on in all the lives he touched.
