A devoted Grandpa, father and loving husand
Harry Garnick was born on June 20, 1900 and died in the same month, June- 85 years later on June 24, 1985. Born in Kielce, Poland, he was a first generation immigrant who came over to America to make a new life. Fleeing from the pogroms of Poland..He was proud to be an American!
Harry worked as a Tailor and after meeting his wife Dora, also an immigrant from Lodz, Poland, they, together, purchased and ran their own Tailor Shop in Brooklyn, New York- in the bowery- for many years. The name "Garnick" was featured on the storefront, and their family of four lived above the shop.
When the Great Depression happened, Harry would mend his customer's clothes without asking for any monetary compensation. He would always ask: "How can I help?" He was a helper and loved to talk with his customers when they would come by the shop.
Harry and Dora had 2 sons, Jerry and Martin. Both married, and also went on to professional careers. Jerry as a Dentist; Martin as a CPA. Martin followed in his father's footsteps and became a business owner of a cleaning contracting firm in New York City.
Harry was a devoted grandfather. He liked his shot of whiskey every night before bed and played a mean game of checkers. He is remembered by his granddaughter as a go-getter and fun loving man, devoted to his work and to his family. Seen here, in this photo, with his granddaughter at her HS graduation. Grandpa Harry's memory is forever for a blessing and an inspiration.
