life story

An energetic businessman and community leader

Hal cared deeply about the children and families of Cook County, working to establish the Cook County Schools Education Foundation, working with the Cook County EDA to develop affordable housing and much more.

Hal loved politics and encouraged others to become involved. He is pictured here with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

About Hal

Hal Greenwood, who had over 50 years of ties with Cook County, passed away on November 19, at the age of 89. His passing followed several weeks in and out of North Shore Health, as his kidneys and heart began to fail. When called at the hospital a few weeks ago by a friend, he told her, “I am getting great care here; it’s a wonderful place to be!”

Hal grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Southwest High School in 1950. Two years later, he married his wife, Carol. He worked as a police officer, a bank president, and had many ties to politicians--on both sides of the aisle. He accompanied David Rockefeller to China, was a friend and supporter of Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and was also in the Kennedy White House. Hal had an amazing understanding of international politics and traveled the world putting his knowledge to good use.

In 1995, Hal and Carol returned to Grand Marais, where they were always hosting community events and fundraisers. He founded our local Cook County Schools Education Foundation and assisted with the founding of the Cook County Chamber. Hal served as chairman of the Cook County Revolving Loan Fund and the Planning, Zoning and Public Utilities Commission for the City of Grand Marais. In addition, Hal sat on the Board of the Cook County Historical Society, serving as Vice President for a period of time.

As a respected local leader, Hal remained engaged in business and politics until his recent illness. Hal was very active with the EDA, and his belief in providing more affordable housing has impacted our county in a very positive way. Jim Boyd, executive director of our Cook County Chamber of Commerce said Hal was, “a larger-than-life, well-respected civic leader.”

Recently, Hal encouraged others to become active and involved, and supported many candidates who were on the ballot this fall.

Preceded in death by his wife Carol, Hal is survived by his children.
